My name is Jon. I was born in Swansea, UK in 1979. Lived there until 2007 when I moved to London area for a new job (career). Currently living in Watford with my wife. We have a baby called Charlie and I also have another son, Jordan, who comes to stay with us regularly.
I did an apprenticeship in a design company and stayed with that company for about seven years after leaving school. Learnt a lot there but eventually felt the need to move on. I just needed more of a challenge, plus wanted to direct my career into a sector I was most interested in; automotive.
I left this company to undertake a degree in Motorsport Engineering and Design in Swansea Institute of Higher Education, although since I left it has changed its name to Swansea Metropolitan University. It was an interesting degree, with a good emphasis on engine design, which is lucky, as that was what I was most interested in. It allowed me basically two years to concentrate fully on nothing but learning about engines. It also gave me the opportunity to meet the company I am now working for on a basis I would never have been able to before. As a student undertaking a degree, the company was interested in taking on new graduates and were keen to see what we had to offer. I made contact with the company and was given a project to undertake for my final year project. This was my Crankshaft Design Package project, which I thoroughly enjoyed and gained a lot of understanding and also the break I needed to get the job with the company.
I am currently working as an automotive design engineer for this reasonably sized and well respected automotive engine design consultancy. I started work there as a graduate in July 2007 after completing the degree. I am currently enjoying my new position very much, learning all the time and honing my skills. I still feel very lucky to be int he position I am in.
There is a (slightly dated) portfolio of work here. Just showing some work from my degree plus some images from previous work experience.
