My name is Jon Reynolds. This site is just simply a hobby site, with no real purpose other than somewhere for me to put 'stuff' as and when I think of something.
I think its greatest use (for me anyway) is my photo gallery, powered by Gallery 3, which is the place I have decided to store all my photos. I like having my stuff out in the cloud, in multiple places, so that I can access it from anywhere, direct other people to it and reduces the chances of it being lost, i.e. if it was all on one computer or disk at home and broke.... it would be gone.
I like to play around with computers a bit. I am far from a computer expert, but I would say I am a enthusiast... at a hobby level. I manage my own web server, which is a VPS, supplied by XenVZ, running (currently) Ubuntu 8,04 LTS. This is an older version and a newer LTS has been released (10,04) but my provider has not provided an image yet, so I will stick with 8,04 until it is available. I did successfully upgrade from 8,04 to 10,04 but recently, I swapped servers and decided to keep things simple for a while.
I have been using Drupal as my CMS for over a year now and enjoy making it work, tailoring it to my needs and am always impressed by how much work gets put into it. I wish I was a bit more able to contribute, but that is still a bit out of my reach.
I like to dabble in programming. I would love to be able to competantly program something in some language. I had a little play with Python initially but didn't take it very far, a few simple scripts and very basic GUIs. But more recently I decided to have a go at PHP. This, to me, seems like a more simple, easy to learn language and I have made some progress developing a little document management system for my own use.
By no means is it a brilliant package that could be 'put out there' as I am sure it is incredibly full of school boy errors, but making it work for me has been a great learning experience. Just having a goal to make something specific helps, rather than just working through mindless examples. I will create a demo version of this package soon I think for people to look at (rip apart!).
Have also been thinking about some other PHP packages that would be of use to me in work (automotive engine design). Still very much WIP.
I like photography. I am always trying to take fancy photos and until recently my main camera was my phone! Not exactly ideal for nice photos, but to be honest the camera on the HTC Desire really wasn't too bad. BUT I recently got an awesome Christmas present off my lovely wife, which was a Fujifilm HS10.
This is by far the best camera I have ever owned or even used. I know it isn't a DLSR, but for my use use, it is amazing! I had an old Pentax 35mm SLR and that took lovely pictures (compared to any camera phone). The lens makes all the difference. Obviously though, the old 35mm film is very inconvenient compared to digital media.
So I am just getting to grips with my HS10 and even the first pictures are coming out great. Examples here.
I also like cars...I use the site to record work I do in the form of guides, which are hopefully of use to other people and also as a place to make a log of the cars I own, almost like a history, that could be shown to a buyer, or just for my own interest.
More to come...
